How did National Waffle Day originate?
Well, someone (somewhere) decided that today would be national waffle day because August 24th is the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron, designed by Cornelius Swarthout of New York. Cornelius received his patent for his waffle baking device in 1869. In it’s beginning years, the waffle iron was used with coal stoves, consisted of a griddle surface and a cover which had the cook flipping the iron in order to cook both sides of a waffle.
